What is the first thing you picture in your mind when you think about a hero? Many of us automatically think about comic book superheroes, and that certainly would be one way to identify the name. The fact of the matter is, however, there are everyday heroes who live among us and they don’t really get the credit that they deserve. They take on many different forms, some of which you may be more than familiar with.
For example, we have first responders, such as paramedics, firefighters and policemen. They are there on a moments notice to assist us in any way that they possibly can. Another category of hero are those who work in an emergency room. Every day, they take care of those who are in a dire situation and they handle every type of emergency you can imagine, from a heart attack to a gunshot wound.
Dr. Mauricio Heilbron, Jr. describes a story for us that took place in the emergency room, and it is one that will certainly amaze you. On that particular night, something happened that is imprinted in his memory and it will always remain with him. He was already working hard to help a gunshot victim and another man, who had his small intestines on the outside of his body. It seemed as if it was all he could handle but suddenly, he saw a woman in labor bending her legs into the air. It was unusual, but he didn’t have time to react.
Before he knew what was going on, a doctor came running by and jumped onto the gurney with the pregnant woman. It was just in time, because the baby came flying out of the woman’s body and caught the child in his arms. Of course, his suit was ruined but the baby was fine.
